Its 9:34am.
Do You know where your Career is headed?
Do you have one? More than likely, you'd never call what you do from 9-5 a career.
You'd probably call it your day job.
If you asked yourself - "Would I be doing this if I had other options?"
What would your answer be? Or, Have you settled for a job just because it pays the bills?
If you could be doing any kind of work you wanted to do - What would it be?
Asking yourself these questions, may lead you to realize that your career is exactly where it started when you first got out of school. Nowhere!
The Good News is that it's not too late to do something about it. You have control over the success of your career.
Here are some proactive steps you can take right now that will help you get the career position you've always wanted.
First, start developing your network: talk to people that are working in areas that interest
you. Investigate and learn what the requirements are needed to be successful in the position(s) that interest you.
Networking will dramatically increase your future ability to transition into a totally different career or change positions in your current company. It can also help you to uncover other potential opportunities you may not be aware of otherwise.
Next, find out what options are available to you with your current skills and experience. Researching industries, companies, their products, services, and business trends will always
give you a competitive edge and help position you for future opportunities.
Schedule informational interviews to learn more about the positions that come close to meeting your goals.
Once you've collected vital information needed to determine the position you want,
then identify the skills you have that make you a fit for the position. Is there a gap
between the skills required and the skills you currently have?
Sign up for classes, seminars, or conferences that will enhance your knowledge.
Prepare your resume. Work with a career coach if you need objective feedback to
determine your marketable skills.
Meet with a recruiter to help you locate your next career position. Be prepared to clearly
define your career interest, including the position, the types of companies, the geographic
location, and your salary expectations.
The important thing for you to remember is that - YOU have choices and YOU control where your career is today.
The MOST dangerous thing in life is to think you have time to play it safe.
